White graduated from Cheltenham in 1924 and then entered Queen's College, Cambridge, as a student of English literature. In this setting he often encountered cruelty and violence. Starting in 1920 White attended Cheltenham College, where he was placed in a division that prepared young men for the army. ![]() As a result, at age 11 White ended up in England under the care of his maternal grandparents. White's parents often argued and eventually separated. White's mother alternated between being possessive of her son and emotionally distant. His father, Garrick Hanbury White, was a district superintendent of police and an alcoholic prone to violent outbursts.
